The cockatoo cichlid is a very attractive fish among the pet fish keepers due to its hardiness and gorgeous coloration. It belongs to the family Cichlidae under Order Perciformes of Class Actinopterygii. It was first described by the Dutch ichthyologist J. J. Hoedeman in 1951.
